Vacations in Bansko
Bansko has been largely advertised and popularized as a ski resort. Many, however, have discovered its charm and beauty throughout the whole year and the potential and possibilities it offers for leisure and tourism in warmer months as well. The resort town is situated in one of the most picturesque and rich in fauna and flora areas and presents prospects for side tourism in Pirin Mountain and even Greece.
The Rila National Park (some 100 km. from Sofia and Bansko) located in the nearby Rila Mountain is home to rare and endangered wildlife species and ecosystems. It sprawls on an area of 81 046 hectares and has an elevation of 800 m. to 2 925 m. Also situated in the northwestern Rila Mountains are the Seven Rila Lakes which are of glacial origin. The Rila Monastery is the largest and most well known Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria and a specimen of extremely stunning architecture which complimented by the allover picturesque surroundings. Established in 10 AD, it is of extreme significance as a cultural and historical site and is perhaps the most visited tourist attraction in the country.
South of Bansko the Pirin National Park is also worth taking a trip to. It is included in the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. Abundant in lakes, caves, historical sites and waterfalls, the historical and natural sites are magnificent.
