Sofia International Airport has transformed significantly the bleak looking, communist remnant which it is familiar to those who’ve visited it in the early 2000s. Consistent with the overall modernization of the country as a whole, the airport’s newest Terminal 2 was completed and officially opened in December 2006. There are two bus routes which join the airport to the Sofia city centre and travel by bus takes about 20 minutes. There is also a convenient bus and shuttle link between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

With the new Terminal began a new era for the Sofia Airport. As the chief and most technologically superior airport in Bulgaria, it is capable of servicing more than twice the number of passengers in comparison to the early 2000s- reaching 2 746 178 passengers in 2007.
